Dire Bound ended up being such an entertaining read for me. It has this fun blend of magical fantasy academy vibes mixed with a little Harry Potter wonder and a whole lot of Fourth Wing attitude. There is danger, drama, and just enough chaos to keep things moving. Itâs the kind of book you can curl up with and fly through without realizing how many pages youâve read. WARNING: I will say, this does have some trigger warnings concerning violence in this book. It is gritty and descriptive. There is also torture described in this book. So certainly keep that in mind if you are sensitive to that.
I would also mention that this book is somewhat a spicy fantasy romance. So keep that in mind if that is something that you are looking for in a fantasy romance.
That said, it definitely had a few rough edges. There were plot holes scattered throughout and some descriptions that felt a little thin, like scenes that needed just a bit more detail to fully come alive. And listen⊠I saw the plot twists coming from a mile away. Like, neon-sign on the Las Vegas Strip obvious. But honestly? I still had fun with this. Predictability doesnât always ruin a book for me if the journey is enjoyableâand this one was

Now, the magic system⊠whew. It wasnât really introduced until the very end of the book, and even then it kind of just appeared without much explanation or setup. Random Shadow Daddy vibes introduced towards the end. I found myself thinking, âOh okay, weâre doing magic now?â instead of feeling eased into it. Thereâs clearly a lot of potential there, but with no early foundation, it was hard to fully grasp how this world works or what the rules are. Iâm hoping the next book dives deeper, because the bones of something cool are definitely there.

What really kept me hooked, though, were the charactersâespecially Stark. I mean *cough* Who doesnât love a dark and broody MMC? He is absolutely the standout for me. Thereâs something about him that feels layered and mysterious in all the right ways. Every time he popped up on the page, which was sometimes few and far between, the story got more interesting. Iâm genuinely excited to see where his arc goes and what else weâll learn about him as the series continues.
Overall, Dire Bound isnât a perfect fantasy, but it is a fun one. Itâs fast, imaginative, easy to follow, and has characters with tons of potential. If you enjoy magical schools, quick reads, or fantasy stories with room to grow, this one is worth picking up. And yes⊠Iâll definitely be grabbing book two Fury Bound to see what chaos unfolds nextâmostly because I need more Stark in my life and I need to see where this goes next.

Okay, now that weâre in spoiler territory⊠I have THOUGHTS about Dire Bound. And Iâm not pointing fingers here, but I have to say it: parts of this book felt like they were written by AI. Mainly because so many details were missing or brushed over, and the writing had that âalmost there but not quite finishedâ vibe. It wasnât terrible, but it was noticeable. I am happy to be wrong though.
Letâs start with the obvious: this story is very similar to Harry Potter and Fourth Wing. So if you those books, you will love this one.
Weâve got:
- A school divided into houses based on personality traits. Also their dormitories was split up into those houses (Pacts) as well. With a central common room for everyone to take their meals in.
- A magical trial (the Ascent) thatâs basically the Parapet
- Direwolves that bond with their rider
- A whole hair-color-coded pack system (Harry Potter Houses)
- Strategos: silver (âleadersâ)
- Kryptos: blue (âspiesâ)
- Daemos: red (âwarriorsâ)
- Phylax: ??? (âguardiansâ) some reason the color was never mentioned.
You cannot tell me that Hogwarts houses don’t scream Hogwarts houses. And the whole âspecial girl with the strange hair streakâ gave me MAJOR Violet energy from Fourth Wing. But instead of a streak⊠Meryn has all silver hair. And weirdly? No one really questioned it or gave it the attention it deserved during the whole book. They looked at it funny and moved on. Canât you tell she is special!?!?
Anessa (Merynâs direwolf) also spent most of the book acting like she absolutely loathed Meryn⊠only for us to find out it was actually Meryn who didnât trust her. I really liked that dynamic because once the truth came out, it showed how much fear and miscommunication shaped their relationship, making their eventual connection more meaningful.
I mentioned earlier that the plot twists were obvious, and yeah⊠Killian/Lee radiated bad vibes from chapter one. I didnât know exactly where it was going until the castle scene, but once it clicked? It was clear as day. I actually loved the evil arc that emerged for him â it gave the story a darker edge and raised the stakes in a fun way. The only thing that threw me off was how suddenly he turned on Meryn. There werenât really any hints or subtle cues leading up to that moment, so even though I enjoyed the twist, it also felt a little out of character and rushed.
Also⊠can we talk about the Rawbound murder scene? Stark asking everyone âWho killed him?â when Meryn literally lost a chunk of hair in the fight had me like⊠sir, the evidence is right there. Be serious.
And Meryn magically becoming Alpha of Strategos? Saw that coming. But with the logic of âsheâs always attacked because sheâs the weakest linkâ in all the trials didnât make sense next to âsheâs the chosen one.â Choose a lane.
The âNabbersâ bit also got repetitive REAL fast. Every time Meryn said it, someone acted confused like it was the first time theyâd heard it. It was consistent throughout the book and I wish she just realized that the only people who know what they are is her.
Then we get a surprise âone bedâ trope tossed in randomly⊠because apparently this book wanted every trope it could fit. And also the whole âStark has made it his lifeâs mission to kill meâ storyline didnât land because⊠he barely interacted with her? Half the time he was actually defending her. We needed ACTIONS to match the claim.
Also, the whole secret heritage plot? Why did EVERYONE keep her in the dark for so long? It wasnât a good twist â it was just frustrating.Â
And of course⊠Starkâs direwolf and Merynâs direwolf being mates. I mean⊠shocker. Cough Fourth Wing cough.
I really wish we got more interaction with the Siphons (vampires) earlier. Theyâre such a huge part of the plot and the war, but barely appeared until the end. But I foresee more of the Siphons showing up in the next book.
Now⊠the Lee = Prince Killian twist was predictable, but I did enjoy the manipulation arc. Him using Meryn to kill his father so he could take the crown was dark⊠and honestly well done. Then blaming her AND wanting to marry her? Unhinged king behavior.
One of the funniest scenes to me was when Stark breaks into the dungeon to save her. He finds the hidden crown, hands it over like itâs a snack, she puts on the crown and then they just chat about her heritage etc while sheâs still imprisoned. Like⊠sir⊠maybe free the girl FIRST?
I did enjoy the lore about the direwolves suffering under a 500-year blood curse. But if the direwolf crown plays such a huge role in maintaining that curse⊠why was it hidden in a drain with zero security?? Someone shouldâve been guarding that thing like it was Fort Knox.
And that final twist â Saela becoming a Siphon â had me actually yelling âPLOT TWIST!!!â
Loved that part. Easily one of the strongest twists in the book and I am here for it. I am really looking forward to the next book Fury Bound in the series.
