WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! If you have not read Shield of Sparrows yet, do not continue with this summary!
Meryn Cooper is known as the Allycat of the Eastern Quarter—and honestly, that nickname is earned. By day, she’s working in a laundry facility. By night? She’s casually beating grown men twice her size in an underground fighting ring. No big deal.
She learned everything from Igor, who basically stepped in as her father after hers died in the war with the Siphons. And she has to fight—because she’s the one holding her family together. Her mom’s mental state is gone, and she’s raising her little sister, Saela.
So yeah… she doesn’t really have the luxury of being soft.
Her boyfriend Lee is one of the few good things in her life. He shows up to her fights, patches her up, supports her. We love a supportive man… for now.
One night, everything falls apart.
Lee notices her mom is getting worse, they have a heavy conversation, and then boom—Saela is gone. Just… gone. And considering girls have been disappearing left and right? Not great. Not great at all.
They search. Nothing.
Days go by. Still nothing.
So Meryn does the only thing she can think of—she enlists in the king’s army, hoping it’ll get her closer to wherever her sister might be. Lee is sad (as he should be), but supportive. Even takes her shopping so she doesn’t have to loot dead soldiers… which is honestly thoughtful and slightly concerning.
She enlists the next day.

At the barracks, she makes a couple friends (Venna and Izabel—icons), and thinks she’s heading to the front lines.
Nope.
Surprise! She’s thrown into bonding trials where people climb an icy death mountain to bond with direwolves.
Love that for her.
Meryn doesn’t even want a wolf—she just wants to find her sister—but of course, fate says “lol no,” and she gets bonded to Anassa… a wolf who hasn’t bonded in over a hundred years. Sounds an awful like Fourth Wing plot line. But I digress.
And Anassa?
Immediately gives her the silent treatment.
Like ma’am… you chose her.
Things only get worse.
At a fancy royal event (aka a glorified meat market), Meryn is just trying to survive unnoticed… until the prince walks out and—
It’s Lee.
LEE.
Actually Prince Killian.
The betrayal?? Immediate. Personal. Unforgivable.
And before she can even process that, the wolves start straight up killing the weak candidates like it’s the Hunger Games: Direwolf Edition.
Meryn survives (barely), Anassa finally helps (a little), and Meryn is left emotionally wrecked.
Naturally.
From there, it’s just one thing after another:
- She kills someone in self-defense → gets tattooed for it (because apparently that’s their thing)
- Her wolf still won’t talk to her → love that communication
- She’s having visions, hearing voices, and sleepwalking → totally fine, definitely not concerning
- Killian keeps popping back into her life like “hey bestie” → sir???
And then there’s Stark.
Her commander. Intimidating. Brutal. Has definitely killed people (a lot of people). Also… there’s something there

Eventually, Meryn and Anassa start to kind of work together (growth!), and Meryn discovers that the kidnappings are real—and organized.
She and Killian go investigate, and she ends up brutally killing one of the kidnappers… again.
At this point, killing is becoming a personality trait.
But hey, she gets answers: there’s a bigger operation, kids are being taken somewhere, and things are way darker than she thought.
Then everything spirals.
Her visions get worse. She starts feeling like she’s losing her mind—just like her mom.
Her mom… who suddenly gets better out of nowhere.
Not suspicious at all 🙂
Killian proposes (???) and she says YES (???), even though Anassa is basically screaming in her head not to.
Red flags. Everywhere. 🚩🚩🚩
Then we get the biggest twist:
Meryn finds her sister.
UNDER THE ARENA.
ALIVE.
Along with a bunch of other kidnapped kids.
And guess who’s behind it all?
The king.
So Meryn does what any reasonable person would do…
She kills him.
Except… surprise again.
Killian turns on her.
Because of course he does.
And then we find out he’s basically possessed by the original villain (Alistair Brightbane), who has been body-hopping through kings for generations.
So that sweet, supportive boyfriend?
Yeah… that was never real.
I need a minute.

Meryn gets thrown in prison, but this is where everything finally clicks.
She learns:
- She’s the actual rightful queen
- The wolves have been waiting for her
- Stark has been protecting her line this whole time
- The entire system is built on lies and blood curses
And suddenly… everything makes sense.
Also… Stark?
Yeah, he’s hers.
Like soul-level, destiny-level, “I will burn the world for you, my queen” energy. Love that shadow daddy trope.
And honestly?
We’re not mad about it.
Meryn tries to take control, confront Killian (who is now fully villain mode), and reclaim her power…
But just when you think she’s got it—
He strips her magic away.
And escapes.
Because villains never just die quietly.
And then… final emotional damage:
Her sister Saela?
Gets turned into a Siphon.
So where does that leave us?
Meryn:
- Lost her mom
- Lost her sister (again… but worse)
- Got betrayed by the man she loved
- Found out she’s a queen
- Has insane power she can’t fully use yet
- And now has a kingdom to take back
No pressure.
And honestly?
By the end, she’s not just fighting to survive anymore.
She’s stepping into something much bigger.
Something dangerous.
Something that’s been waiting for her all along.
And that ending??
Yeah… it changes everything.
