Okay, let’s talk about this story because it starts off feeling like a political marriage situation… and then slowly spirals into wait—what is actually happening right now?!

Odessa is the oldest princess of Quentis, which should mean she’s the obvious choice for royal responsibilities, right? Nope. That honor goes to her younger sister Mae, who has been trained her whole life to fulfill the Shield of Sparrows—basically a long-standing peace agreement where royal families across the five kingdoms of Calandra marry each other off every few generations to keep things civil. Normal royal chaos.

But then Prince Zavier Wolf of Turan shows up early—already suspicious—and instead of choosing Mae like everyone expected, he requests Odessa. Cue record scratch. Odessa’s father doesn’t exactly fight it (because of course he doesn’t), and suddenly she’s being shipped off into a political marriage she didn’t prepare for. And it gets worse—Zavier doesn’t even speak publicly. Instead, his very intense, very powerful Guardian speaks for him… including during the vows. Which Odessa later realizes means she didn’t actually marry Zavier at all. Surprise! She’s married to the Guardian. Love that for her.

Before she leaves, her father casually drops a side quest—find the hidden capital of Turan, Allesaria, and figure out how to infiltrate it. Oh, and apparently this place holds the key to defeating the crux, which are basically nightmare fuel in the form of giant, deadly bird-like monsters that show up every few decades to ruin everyone’s lives. No pressure.

Once in Turan, Odessa travels through towns like Treow and Ellder, where everyone is tight-lipped about Allesaria (red flag), and the general vibe is “we’re all just trying not to die.” The monsters here bleed green, which is never a comforting detail. Along the way, she grows close to Evie—Zavier’s “daughter”—and the Guardian, who is… not normal. Like at all.

Eventually, the truth starts unraveling. The Guardian is actually Ransom Zavier Wolfe, the real crown prince. The man she thought was Zavier? Just a body double. Evie? Not his daughter—his sister. At this point, Odessa is probably rethinking every life choice that led her here.

And then there’s the Lyssa infection. Ransom has it, the monsters have it, and it turns out it all traces back to an experimental elixir created by Luella, the missing queen of Turan. The idea was to make humans strong enough to survive the crux, which sounds great in theory… until a monster bite turns that enhancement into a full-blown nightmare disease. Now it spreads, mutates, and gives infected people terrifying abilities.

Meanwhile, King Ramsey (Ransom’s father) is out here trying to recreate the effects without understanding the full picture—because obviously that won’t go wrong. Odessa realizes this “weapon” her father wanted could actually make things so much worse, especially if it spreads to the crux themselves. So yeah… she’s officially not on Team Betrayal anymore.

Things really hit the fan when one of Odessa’s maids betrays Luella’s location, bringing the king—and his army—straight to them. He orders everyone to evacuate to Allesaria because, surprise again, the crux migration is happening early. Timing could not be worse.

Then chaos. A crux attacks. People are dying. Ransom goes full unstoppable mode to hold it off while Odessa and Evie escape with the help of a mysterious priest who definitely knows more than he’s saying (don’t they always?). And just when you think it can’t get stranger—the crux Ransom kills transforms into a young woman… with hair the exact same shade as Odessa’s.

Yeah. Let that sink in.

By the end, Odessa is no longer just a pawn in a political game—she’s standing at the center of something much bigger and far more dangerous. With truths uncovered, loyalties shifting, and the terrifying connection between the crux and humanity revealed, the story leaves you with more questions than answers. And honestly? That final twist changes everything.

And I don’t say this lightly—this has officially become my favorite read of 2025.
