If A Court of Frost and Starlight was our cozy little Winter Solstice break in Velaris, A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas decided we had relaxed long enough.

Because now it’s Nesta Archeron’s turn.

And if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Nesta throughout the ACOTAR series, it’s that she isn’t exactly the easiest person to love.

She’s stubborn, angry, defensive, and has a talent for saying the one thing that will hurt someone the most.

But underneath all that attitude is someone who is absolutely falling apart.

This time, we’re leaving Feyre and Rhys’s love story behind and getting into Nesta and Cassian’s complicated relationship.

We’ve got ancient magical weapons, the return of the Valkyries, a dangerous pregnancy, a terrifying mountain trial, and enough romantic tension to make up for the fact that these two have spent several books refusing to admit their feelings.

And yes, this is definitely one of the spicier books in the ACOTAR series.

If you enjoy figuring out where your favorite romantasy books fall on the heat scale, my Ultimate Guide to Spicy Fantasy Romance breaks down the different spice levels and what to expect.

But first, let’s get back to Prythian.

If you need a refresher on how Nesta ended up here, you can also read my A Court of Frost and Starlight book recap, where we first see just how badly she’s struggling after the war.

Also, don’t forget to check out my other ACOTAR book recaps: A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury and A Court of Wings and Ruin.

Nesta Archeron Has Officially Hit Rock Bottom

When we last saw Nesta, she was spending most of her time avoiding her family, drinking, gambling, and bringing home random males.

Well, things haven’t improved.

She’s still living alone in a rundown apartment in Velaris, using Feyre and Rhys’s money to fund her increasingly destructive lifestyle.

And Feyre has finally had enough.

She summons Nesta to the river house for what is essentially a family intervention.

Feyre, Rhys, and Amren confront her about her behavior and give her two choices.

She can move into the House of Wind, train with Cassian every morning, and work in the library during the afternoons.
Or she can return to the human lands.

Considering she’s now High Fae and wouldn’t exactly be welcomed back by the humans, it’s not much of a choice.

Nesta is furious.

But she agrees.

And just like that, she’s moving into the House of Wind with Cassian and Azriel.

Which sounds like the beginning of a very interesting living arrangement.

The House of Wind Becomes Nesta's New Home

The House of Wind sits high above Velaris, accessible by flying, winnowing, or climbing approximately 10,000 stairs.

Nesta can’t fly. She can’t winnow. And those stairs They’re about to become her personal enemy.

At first, Nesta refuses to participate in Cassian’s training sessions.

Technically, Feyre said she had to attend training.

She never said Nesta had to actually do anything. So Nesta sits there. In the cold.

Surrounded by Illyrian warriors who don’t believe females should be training in the first place.

Eventually, Cassian realizes that forcing Nesta to train in front of judgmental males isn’t helping.

He moves their sessions to the roof of the House of Wind, where they can work privately.

And surprisingly, Nesta starts participating. Not enthusiastically. Not without complaining. But she starts.

Meanwhile, she spends her afternoons working in the library under the supervision of the High Priestess Clotho.

The library is a sanctuary for priestesses who have experienced terrible things, and Nesta slowly begins to find a place among them.

And then there’s the House itself.

Because apparently, the House of Wind has a personality. It brings Nesta food, gives her books, prepares baths, and even refuses to serve her alcohol.

Honestly, I would like a house that automatically brings me snacks and books.
Where do I sign up?

Nesta Meets Gwyn and Emerie

One of my favorite parts of A Court of Silver Flames is watching Nesta develop friendships outside the Inner Circle.

Because for so long, Nesta has been surrounded by people who already have opinions about her. But Gwyn and Emerie? They get to know Nesta for who she is now.

Gwyn is a priestess working in the library. She’s intelligent, stubborn, and carrying trauma from the war.

Emerie is an Illyrian shopkeeper who refuses to let the males around her dictate how she should live. Her father had her wings clipped, preventing her from flying.

Nesta initially connects with Gwyn through their work in the library and with Emerie during her visits to Windhaven.

Eventually, Nesta convinces both women to join her training sessions.

And this is where things really start changing.

What began as Nesta reluctantly learning how to throw a punch becomes something much bigger.
The women are training together.

Encouraging each other.
Learning how to defend themselves.

And, perhaps most importantly, building friendships.

For the first time in a long time, Nesta has people she actually wants to be around.

Cassian and Nesta Are Definitely Not Just Friends

Meanwhile, Cassian and Nesta are doing what Cassian and Nesta do best. Arguing. Flirting. Arguing some more. And pretending they’re not completely obsessed with each other.

Their attraction has been building since A Court of Wings and Ruin, but Nesta refuses to acknowledge that there’s anything emotional happening between them.

Cassian, on the other hand, has been interested in Nesta for a very long time.

He sees the pain underneath her anger, even when she’s doing everything possible to push him away.

Eventually, their relationship becomes physical.

And Nesta is very clear that she doesn’t want anything serious.

Just sex. No feelings. No attachments.

Which, if you’ve read literally any fantasy romance before, you already know is going to work out wonderfully.

The more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to pretend their relationship is purely physical.
Cassian starts seeing a softer side of Nesta.

Nesta begins understanding Cassian’s insecurities, especially the way other High Fae look down on him for being an Illyrian bastard.

They’re both convinced, in different ways, that they aren’t worthy of being loved.

And that’s really what keeps getting in their way.

The Human Queens Are Causing Problems Again

While Nesta is working through her personal issues, the Night Court has another problem.

Remember the human queens from the earlier books?

Well, one of them is back.
Queen Briallyn entered the Cauldron expecting immortality and beauty.

Instead, she emerged aged and furious. And she blames Nesta.

Briallyn has allied herself with Beron, the High Lord of the Autumn Court, and may also be working with Koschei, the mysterious sorcerer who keeps Vassa trapped under his curse.

The Night Court suspects they’re planning something dangerous.

And they’re right.

Because Briallyn isn’t simply interested in starting another war.

She wants something much more powerful.

The Dread Trove: Three Objects You Need to Remember

The Dread Trove consists of ancient magical objects created by the Cauldron.

And each one is terrifying in its own way.

Object

Power

The Mask

Raises and controls the dead

The Harp

Opens doors, breaks barriers, and can manipulate time

The Crown

Allows its wearer to control the minds and actions of others

Briallyn wants these objects because they could give her the power to conquer Prythian.

And since Nesta was Made by the Cauldron, she has a special connection to them.

The Inner Circle decides Nesta should help locate the Trove.

Nesta isn’t thrilled about this.

Her experience inside the Cauldron was one of the most traumatic moments of her life, and the last thing she wants is to reconnect with its magic.

But when Elain volunteers to search for the objects instead, Nesta steps in.

She doesn’t want her sister put in danger.

And there’s another reason the Inner Circle is being especially careful.

Feyre is pregnant.

Yes, we’re officially getting a little Night Court baby.

But that happy announcement comes with a problem we’ll get to later.

Nesta Finds the Mask in the Bog of Oorid

Nesta eventually manages to locate the first object: the Mask.

Unfortunately, it’s hidden in the Bog of Oorid.

Which is exactly as welcoming as it sounds.

Nesta travels there with Cassian and Azriel, but things go wrong almost immediately.

The males are attacked by soldiers, leaving Nesta alone.
And then she encounters a kelpie.

The creature drags Nesta underwater, where she discovers the remains of its previous victims.

But she also finds something else.

The Mask. Nesta puts it on. And suddenly, the dead obey her.

She commands the bodies beneath the water to rise and destroy the kelpie.

When Cassian and Azriel finally find her, Nesta emerges from the bog wearing the Mask, carried by an army of the dead.

Oh, and she’s holding the kelpie’s severed head. Casual.

This is one of the first moments where we really see just how frightening Nesta’s power can be.

The Mask is supposed to be nearly impossible to remove without dying.

But Nesta takes it off.

Because she was Made by the Cauldron, just like the Mask.

And apparently, the rules don’t apply to her in quite the same way.

Nesta's Power Is Literally Death

Throughout the book, Nesta struggles to understand exactly what she took from the Cauldron.

She knows she’s powerful.

She knows her magic is dangerous.

But she doesn’t fully understand it.

During one particularly terrible nightmare, Nesta becomes trapped in memories of the Cauldron.

Cassian and Azriel can’t wake her.

Rhys eventually intervenes and experiences some of what

Nesta endured.

And what he discovers terrifies him.

Nesta’s power is essentially death itself.

Not exactly the kind of magic you want accidentally coming out when you’re having a bad day.

But the more Nesta trains, the more she begins learning how to control herself.

And that control becomes incredibly important.

The Valkyries Are Back

As Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie continue training, they begin studying the ancient Valkyries.

These legendary female warriors were known for their combat skills, discipline, and ability to control their minds.
They weren’t simply good with swords.

They trained their bodies and minds together.

And for Nesta, that’s exactly what she needs.

Gwyn introduces her to Valkyrie breathing and meditation techniques, which help Nesta quiet the constant anger and guilt running through her head.

Meanwhile, Cassian begins incorporating Valkyrie fighting techniques into their lessons.
More priestesses eventually join the training sessions.

And suddenly, what started with three women learning to defend themselves becomes the beginning of something much bigger.

They’re bringing the Valkyries back.

I love that Nesta doesn’t find her confidence by suddenly becoming perfect.

She finds it through practice.
Friendship.

Making mistakes. And showing up again the next day.

Nesta Accidentally Creates Magical Weapons

During training, Cassian takes Nesta to visit a blacksmith.

He wants her to understand how weapons are made.

Nesta gets the opportunity to forge several weapons herself.

A sword. A dagger. And a great sword. Nothing unusual, right?

Except Nesta accidentally pours some of her Cauldron power into them.

And now they’re magical.

The blacksmith becomes alarmed and brings the weapons to the Inner Circle.

Amren realizes what Nesta has done.

These aren’t ordinary enchanted blades.

They’re Made weapons, something incredibly rare and powerful.

Amren even suggests that Rhys could use this new power to become High King of Prythian.

Rhys refuses.

But there’s a bigger problem.

The Inner Circle decides not to tell Nesta about the weapons.

Which goes about as well as you’d expect.

Feyre's Pregnancy Comes With a Terrifying Problem

Remember how I mentioned Feyre’s pregnancy was going to become a problem?

Well, here’s why.

Feyre conceived while she was in her Illyrian form.

And the baby has wings.

The problem is that Feyre’s body isn’t built to deliver a winged baby safely.

The healers fear that childbirth could kill her.

And because Feyre and Rhys made that bargain to die together in A Court of Wings and Ruin, Rhys would die too.
Meaning their baby could lose both parents.

Rhys knows.

The Inner Circle knows.

But Feyre doesn’t know the full danger.

Which is a pretty massive secret to keep from the person actually giving birth.

Nesta eventually discovers that everyone has been hiding information about the magical weapons she created.

She becomes furious and confronts Amren.

During their argument, Nesta lashes out and tells Feyre the truth about her pregnancy.

Not gently.

Not because she’s trying to help.

But because she’s angry and wants to hurt someone.

Feyre is devastated.

Rhys is absolutely furious with Nesta.

And Cassian ends up taking Nesta into the mountains to get her away from the situation.

Nesta Finally Breaks Down

Cassian and Nesta spend several days hiking through the mountains. And it’s miserable.

Nesta is physically exhausted.

She’s barely speaking and she’s drowning in guilt.

Not just about Feyre. But about everything. Their father’s death. Her treatment of her sisters. The things she said to Cassian. The choices she made after the war.

Everything she’s been carrying finally catches up with her.

And Nesta breaks down.

She admits that she hates herself.

That she doesn’t know how to fix the damage she’s caused.

That she doesn’t believe she deserves happiness.

And Cassian finally understands just how much pain she’s been hiding.

He tells her that she needs to learn to forgive herself.

Because no amount of punishment is going to change the past.

This is a huge turning point for Nesta.

Not because everything magically gets better afterward.

But because she finally starts facing the things she’s been trying so hard to avoid.

Nesta Finds the Harp

Eventually, Nesta attends one of the priestesses’ musical services.

And music has always been important to her.

Before her family lost everything, Nesta loved dancing. She loved music.

And listening to the priestesses sing brings back something she thought she’d lost.

But it also triggers a magical vision.

Nesta discovers the location of the Harp, another piece of the Dread Trove.

It’s hidden inside the Prison.

You know, the place where the Night Court keeps some of the most dangerous creatures in existence. Perfect.

Nesta and Cassian travel there together.

Nesta carries the magical sword she forged, which she names Ataraxia.

The name means inner peace.

Which feels pretty fitting considering everything she’s been working toward.

Inside the Prison, they locate the Harp.

But Briallyn uses the Crown to connect with Nesta, and Nesta must use the Harp to break that connection.

Unfortunately, doing so also releases Lanthys, an ancient and incredibly dangerous creature.

Lanthys attacks Cassian and tries to convince Nesta that they could rule together using the Trove.

He even shows her a vision suggesting there’s a fourth object.

Nesta isn’t interested.

She uses Ataraxia to kill him.

And just like that, she’s killed something that was supposed to be immortal.

Honestly, I think everyone should be a little more concerned about how powerful Nesta is.

Nesta Dances With Eris

The Night Court still needs allies, especially with Briallyn and Koschei causing problems.
And that means keeping Eris, the Autumn Court prince, on their side.

Feyre suggests that Nesta dance with Eris at an upcoming ball. Nesta agrees. Cassian? Not thrilled. Not even a little.

But Nesta has always been an excellent dancer, and when she steps onto the dance floor with Eris, she absolutely knows what she’s doing.

Eris is completely captivated.

So much so that he eventually asks Rhys for Nesta’s hand in marriage.

In exchange, he’s willing to offer political support.

And Cassian is practically losing his mind.

Because watching the woman you’re in love with dance with another male is one thing.

Watching that male try to marry her? Absolutely not.

Cassian's Winter Solstice Gift

Later, Cassian gives Nesta a Winter Solstice present.
It’s a small magical device called a Symphonia, filled with music.

Cassian knows how much music means to Nesta.

He knows how much she’s missed it.

And he wanted to give her something that would bring that part of her life back.

Which is actually incredibly sweet.

Nesta initially struggles to accept the gift.

Not because she doesn’t love it.

But because she doesn’t believe she deserves that kind of thoughtfulness.

Eventually, she admits that she’s been pushing Cassian away because she feels unworthy of his love.

And Cassian reassures her.
Their relationship finally begins moving beyond physical attraction.

They stop pretending this is simply something casual.
Because it clearly hasn’t been casual for a very long time.

The Valkyries Complete Their Training

Meanwhile, Nesta, Gwyn, and

Emerie are getting stronger.
Much stronger.

They complete the Valkyrie ribbon-cutting challenge, slicing through a ribbon with their swords.

Then Cassian and Azriel create an obstacle course that can only be completed through teamwork.

The women struggle. They fail. They keep trying. And eventually, they finish it together.

Cassian reveals that they’ve completed the equivalent of the Blood Rite Qualifier, an achievement that even some Illyrian warriors never reach.
And the Illyrian males watching aren’t particularly happy about it.

Because apparently watching three women prove themselves is just too much for their fragile egos.

The Valkyries have officially arrived.

Cassian Reveals They're Mates

After everything they’ve been through, Cassian finally tells Nesta the truth. They’re mates.

And Nesta doesn’t exactly respond the way he hoped.

Because accepting the mating bond means accepting that she’s Fae.

That she’s no longer human.

And that the life she once imagined for herself is completely gone.

Nesta panics.

She asks Cassian to give her space, using the favor he promised her during their earliest training sessions.
Cassian agrees.

But before they can work things out, something terrible happens.

If magical bonds and couples who are quite literally destined for each other are one of your favorite parts of ACOTAR, you’ll probably enjoy my Best Fated Mates Fantasy Romance Books for more romances built around that same trope.

Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie Are Taken Into the Blood Rite

Nesta goes to stay with Emerie.
Gwyn joins them.

And the three women are attacked and abducted.

They wake up inside the Blood Rite, the brutal Illyrian trial that warriors must survive to earn their status.

Except they didn’t volunteer.
They’ve been forced into it. They have no magic. No access to their usual weapons.

And they’re surrounded by Illyrian males who don’t believe women belong there.

Some of whom are perfectly willing to kill them.

This is where all that Valkyrie training finally gets put to the test.

The women must survive using everything Cassian and Azriel taught them.

They fight. They hide. They outsmart their opponents. And most importantly, they find each other.

The friendship bracelets they made together carry an unexpected bit of Nesta’s magic, helping bring them back together.

And once they’re reunited, they decide they’re not simply going to survive the Blood Rite.

They’re going to finish it.

The Valkyries Take on Ramiel

The Blood Rite ends at the summit of Mount Ramiel.

And Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie decide to climb it.

Which is an absolutely ridiculous goal considering what they’ve already survived.

But I love them for it.
They fight their way through Illyrian warriors and make it farther than almost anyone expects.

Gwyn is injured by an arrow, making the climb even more difficult.

Still, they refuse to give up.
Eventually, they reach the Pass of Enalius, the narrow passage leading toward the summit.

But Bellius, Emerie’s cruel cousin, and his warriors are closing in.

Nesta realizes they won’t all make it if they continue together.

So she makes a decision.

She tells Emerie to take Gwyn and keep climbing.

Nesta will stay behind and hold the pass.

And this is one of my favorite moments in the entire book.
Because the Nesta we met at the beginning of A Court of Silver Flames was barely willing to get out of bed and face another day.

Now she’s standing alone against a group of warriors, willing to sacrifice herself so her friends can survive.

That’s some serious character development.

Emerie and Gwyn reach the summit, completing the Blood Rite and earning the extraordinary distinction of reaching the top together.

Meanwhile, Nesta stays behind to fight.

Queen Briallyn Finally Makes Her Move

While the Valkyries are fighting for their lives, Cassian and Azriel are dealing with another trap.

Koschei has been manipulating events, and Eris has fallen under magical control.
Eventually, Briallyn uses the Crown to take control of Cassian too.

And she brings him directly to Nesta.

Nesta has survived the warriors at the pass, but now she’s facing something much worse.

Her own mate.

Under Briallyn’s control.

Briallyn demands the Dread Trove.

Nesta refuses. So Briallyn orders Cassian to kill.

Cassian manages to turn the weapon toward himself rather than Nesta.

And seeing him apparently stab himself sends Nesta’s power exploding.

She destroys Briallyn with her Cauldron-born magic.

Thankfully, Cassian survives.

And the Crown is finally out of Briallyn’s hands. The immediate threat is over. But Koschei is still out there.

And before Nesta and Cassian can celebrate surviving everything…

They’re summoned back to Velaris.

Because Feyre is dying.

Feyre's Labor Goes Horribly Wrong

Feyre has gone into premature labor.

And just as everyone feared, the baby’s wings are causing life-threatening complications.
Feyre is losing blood.

The healers can’t save her.

Rhys is going to die with her because of their bargain.

And their baby is dying too.

So after everything Feyre and Rhys survived in the previous books, we’re somehow right back here again.

On the verge of losing them.
Nesta arrives and realizes there’s only one thing she can do.

She uses the Harp to stop time.

Then she reaches out to the Cauldron and the Mother.

And she makes an offer.

She’ll give back the power she stole from the Cauldron if it means saving Feyre, Rhys, and their baby.

This is a massive sacrifice.
Nesta spent the entire book learning to understand her power.

Learning to control it. Learning to accept herself as Fae. And now she’s willing to give almost all of that power away to save her family.

The Cauldron accepts her bargain, and the Mother intervenes, allowing Nesta to keep a small portion of her magic.

Feyre survives. Rhys survives. And their son survives. Nyx is born.

Nesta also uses the opportunity to change Feyre’s body so she can safely deliver winged children in the future.

And she makes the same change to herself, should she and Cassian decide to have children someday.

Which is a pretty big hint about where their relationship might eventually go.

Nesta and Cassian Finally Get Their Happy Ending

After saving Feyre and her family, Nesta finally begins accepting something she’s struggled with throughout the entire book.

She deserves to be loved. She deserves a home. And she deserves happiness.

Nesta and Cassian fully accept their mating bond.

Nesta even wants a proper mating ceremony.

And Rhys, grateful that Nesta saved Feyre and Nyx, gives her the House of Wind.

The same place that once felt like a prison has become her home.

Not because she’s trapped there.

But because she finally belongs somewhere.

And I love that the House itself has been part of her journey.

It was there when she couldn’t face the world.

It gave her books. It brought her food. It became her friend. And now it’s hers.

Where Everyone Ends Up

By the end of A Court of Silver Flames, a lot has changed for the characters we’ve been following since the beginning of the series.

Nesta and Cassian: After spending most of the book refusing to admit how much they love each other, they’ve finally accepted their mating bond. Nesta also has a home of her own in the House of Wind.

Gwyn and Emerie: These two have gone from learning how to defend themselves to reaching the summit of Ramiel and completing the Blood Rite. The Valkyries are officially back.

Feyre and Rhys: They survive a terrifying childbirth and welcome their son, Nyx, into the world.

Elain: Her relationship with Nesta begins to heal, but there’s still plenty we don’t know about her future, especially when it comes to Lucien and their mating bond.
Amren: After their falling-out, Nesta finally apologizes, and the two begin repairing their friendship.

Eris: He’s still a complicated political ally, and his relationship with the Night Court remains far from simple.

Briallyn: Dead, thanks to Nesta.

Koschei: Still out there, which means the Night Court’s problems are far from over.
And we still have that mysterious fourth Dread Trove object to think about.

The Ending of A Court of Silver Flames Explained

By the end of the book, Nesta is almost unrecognizable from the woman we met at the beginning.

And I don’t mean she’s suddenly become sweet and agreeable.

She’s still Nesta. Stubborn. Sharp-tongued. Not particularly interested in pleasing everyone around her. But she no longer sees herself as someone who deserves to suffer.

She has friends. She has a home. She has Cassian.

And she’s finally learning that she can love people without constantly pushing them away first.

The political problems in Prythian are far from resolved.

Koschei is still out there.

The human and Fae realms remain vulnerable to future conflict.

And the Dread Trove has raised some pretty interesting questions about ancient magic and the Cauldron.

So while Nesta and Cassian get their happy ending, Sarah J. Maas definitely leaves some doors open for future ACOTAR stories.

Final Thoughts

A Court of Silver Flames is a very different book from the earlier ACOTAR novels.

Feyre’s story was about survival, finding love, and discovering where she belonged.

Nesta’s story is about what happens when you survive something terrible but don’t know how to move forward afterward.

And I think that’s why the friendships with Gwyn and Emerie matter just as much as the romance with Cassian.

Because Nesta doesn’t magically get better because a man loves her.

Cassian supports her, absolutely. But Nesta has to do the work herself.

She has to make friends. Learn new skills. Face her mistakes. And decide that she actually wants a future.

Plus, can we appreciate the fact that the woman who started this book refusing to participate in a basic training session ended up defending a mountain pass against Illyrian warriors?

That’s a character arc.

And with Koschei still lurking in the background, the mystery of the fourth Dread Trove object, and plenty of unfinished business among the Inner Circle, I cannot wait for the next book A Court of Splintered Harmony.

And if you’re not ready to leave Prythian either, I’ve got a couple of fun ways to keep the ACOTAR obsession going.
