A Court of Wings and Ruin Recap: Everything You Need to Remember
If A Court of Mist and Fury was about Feyre finding herself and falling completely in love with our favorite Shadow Daddy, A Court of Wings and Ruin is where she has to fight to keep everything she found.
And I mean fight.
ACOWAR takes us straight into war with Hybern, but first Feyre has some unfinished business at the Spring Court.
There are spies, betrayals, High Lord drama, terrifying monsters, Nesta being Nesta, Elain casually seeing the future, and enough emotional damage in the final battle to make you wonder why we do this to ourselves.
So, if it’s been a while since you visited Prythian, here is my full A Court of Wings and Ruin recap with all the important spoilers you need to remember.

Feyre Is Back at the Spring Court... But Not for Tamlin
After the ending of A Court of Mist and Fury, Feyre is back at the Spring Court pretending that Rhys manipulated her and that she still loves Tamlin.
But we know better.
She’s secretly Rhys’s mate, wife, and High Lady of the Night Court. She returned to the Spring Court for one reason: revenge.
Tamlin’s alliance with the King of Hybern helped lead to Nesta and Elain being kidnapped and forced into the Cauldron. Feyre plans to gather information about Hybern while destroying Tamlin’s court from the inside.
And Feyre is GOOD at this.
She undermines Ianthe, manipulates Tamlin’s jealousy, wins over his sentries, and carefully makes his people question whether their High Lord deserves their loyalty.
When Tamlin loses his temper and physically blasts Feyre across a room, she deliberately lets his sentries see her injuries.
Then Ianthe falsely accuses a sentry of failing at his duties. Feyre exposes the lie, but Tamlin still has the sentry whipped.
Basically, Feyre doesn’t have to convince the Spring Court that Tamlin is failing them.
She just gives Tamlin enough rope to do it himself.
Unfortunately, Feyre will eventually realize that destroying the Spring Court has consequences she didn’t fully consider.

Feyre and Lucien Escape Together
Things finally explode when Feyre discovers Ianthe attempting to force herself on Lucien.
Feyre intervenes and uses her powers to make sure Ianthe understands exactly what happens when she ignores someone’s consent.
But Hybern’s twins, Brannagh and Dagdan, arrive.
They’ve secretly been poisoning Feyre with faebane, which suppresses her magic. Feyre and Lucien still manage to kill them, but now Feyre needs to escape before her powers completely disappear.
Lucien decides to go with her because he wants to find Elain.
So the two flee through the Autumn Court, where Lucien’s brothers hunt them down. Eventually Cassian and Azriel arrive to rescue them, and Feyre finally makes it home to Velaris.
And then…
RHYS.
After weeks apart, Feyre and Rhys are finally reunited.
She is home.
Nesta and Elain Are Not Okay
While Feyre was busy destroying the Spring Court, her sisters were trying to survive what Hybern did to them.
Elain is devastated.
She barely eats, sleeps, or speaks and continues mourning the human life she lost, particularly her engagement to Graysen.
And then there’s the complication of Lucien being her mate.
Lucien desperately wants to know Elain, but Feyre and Nesta make it very clear that a mating bond doesn’t mean Elain owes him anything.
Nesta handles her transformation differently.
She’s angry.
Cold.
Powerful.
And apparently she didn’t simply survive the Cauldron.
She stole something from it.
Nesta doesn’t know exactly what she took, but whatever is inside her is powerful enough to scare basically everyone.
Meanwhile, Cassian cannot stop paying attention to her.
Nothing to see here, folks.
Definitely nothing developing between those two.
Elain Is a Seer
Everyone initially assumes Elain’s strange behavior is trauma.
Then she starts saying things that don’t make any sense.
A firebird.
A black raven.
A white raven.
Hands growing old.
Eventually Azriel figures it out.
Elain is a Seer.
Her visions aren’t meaningless. She’s seeing things that haven’t happened yet.
One vision leads them to Vassa, a mortal queen who opposed Hybern and was cursed to become a firebird during the day.
Lucien volunteers to leave Prythian and search for her.
Meanwhile, Nesta and Feyre are attacked inside the Velaris library by two Hybern soldiers known as the Ravens. Feyre leads them deep into the library and makes a bargain with the terrifying creature living below it.
That creature is Bryaxis.
Remember that name.
We’re going to need him later.
Feyre Starts Collecting Some Terrifying Allies
War with Hybern is coming, and Rhys and Feyre know the Night Court cannot win alone.
So apparently we’re entering our collect scary monsters like Pokémon phase.
Feyre visits the Bone Carver and asks him to fight.
He agrees under one condition: Feyre must retrieve the Ouroboros mirror.
Small problem.
No one has ever looked into the mirror and survived what they’ve seen.
Then Feyre strikes another bargain with Bryaxis. He’ll fight Hybern if Feyre gives him a window so he can see the sun and stars.
Honestly?
For an ancient nightmare monster living underneath a library, his demands are surprisingly reasonable.
The War Officially Begins
Hybern attacks Adriata in the Summer Court.
Even though Tarquin still hates Feyre and Rhys for stealing the Book of Breathings, the Night Court immediately comes to his aid.
This is Feyre’s first real experience with war.
And it isn’t glorious.
It’s horrifying.
She watches her friends kill because they have to. She sees bodies everywhere. She realizes that even if they survive, none of them will walk away unchanged.
During the battle, Rhys appears to confront the King of Hybern, only to discover that the king is an illusion.
Afterward, Tarquin questions why the Night Court helped him.
Because despite everything that happened between them, they are fighting for the same thing: a better future.
Rhys also publicly announces Feyre as High Lady of the Night Court

The High Lords Meeting Is Pure Chaos
Now we get one of my favorite sections of ACOWAR.
The High Lords gather to decide whether they’ll unite against Hybern.
And this meeting is MESSY.
Everyone has grudges.
Everyone has secrets.
Tamlin arrives.
Beron is terrible.
Feyre’s powers are exposed.
People attack each other.
Basically, imagine the worst family Thanksgiving dinner you’ve ever attended, except everyone has magical powers and several guests could level the building.
Tamlin reveals that he’s actually been gathering information on Hybern from the inside.
Feyre and Rhys realize they may have underestimated him.
Feyre also learns another HUGE secret.
Helion and the Lady of Autumn were once lovers.
Which means Lucien is actually Helion’s son and potentially heir to the Day Court.
Lucien, however, has absolutely no idea.
Then Nesta senses something happening with the Cauldron.
Seconds later, the world shakes.
Hybern destroys the Wall.
The barrier separating humans and faeries is officially gone.
War is here.
Jurian Isn't Who Everyone Thought
The Night Court travels into the human lands looking for allies.
Elain finally sees Graysen again, hoping he’ll still love her despite becoming High Fae.
He doesn’t.
He rejects her.
It’s heartbreaking, but it also becomes an important turning point for Elain. She’s slowly learning that she isn’t simply someone’s daughter, fiancée, or mate.
She’s Elain.
Then comes another surprise.
Jurian isn’t actually loyal to Hybern.
He’s been working against the king.
His priority is protecting humanity, and he gives Feyre information about weaknesses in Hybern’s forces before returning undercover.
Turns out basically nobody in this book is exactly where Feyre thought they were standing.
Including Tamlin.
Goodbye, Suriel 😭
As the war worsens, Feyre needs to locate Hybern’s hidden army.
So she does what Feyre apparently always does when she desperately needs information.
She catches a Suriel.
Again.
The Suriel tells her Nesta can use her connection to the Cauldron to locate Hybern. It also gives Feyre a clue about Amren and the Book of Breathings.
Most importantly, Feyre asks about the Ouroboros mirror.
The Suriel essentially tells her that whether the mirror destroys her depends on Feyre herself.
And then Ianthe appears.
She has tracked Feyre through the Suriel.
The Suriel is shot and dies.
I was NOT okay.
The Suriel has quietly helped Feyre since the beginning of this series, and its final encounter pushes Feyre toward one of the biggest realizations of her entire story.
Feyre then leads Ianthe directly to the Weaver.
You can probably guess how well that works out for Ianthe.

Tamlin Saves Feyre
Later, Elain is captured by Hybern.
Feyre and Azriel infiltrate the enemy camp to rescue her, but they’re discovered.
And the person who helps them escape?
Tamlin.
Yes. Tamlin.
The same man Feyre spent the beginning of the book destroying ultimately risks himself to help save Elain and gives Feyre the magical push she needs to escape.
It doesn’t erase everything Tamlin did.
But it does force Feyre to accept something she’s been learning throughout this entire war:
People aren’t always simply good or evil.
The person she considered an enemy can still save her life.
Feyre Faces the Ouroboros Mirror
Feyre finally decides to retrieve the Ouroboros mirror.
Instead of being destroyed by what she sees, she accepts it.
The good.
The bad.
The things she’s done to survive.
The mistakes she’s made.
The person she’s become.
She stops needing to see herself as completely good in order to believe she’s worthy of love.
And that allows her to claim the mirror.
The Bone Carver joins the war.
Helion also frees the Weaver.
And Bryaxis arrives.
We now officially have three ancient nightmare creatures fighting for Prythian.
What could possibly go wrong?
The Final Battle Begins
Hybern’s forces arrive, and the final battle is absolutely massive.
Bryaxis attacks.
The Bone Carver attacks.
The Weaver attacks.
Tamlin brings what remains of the Spring Court.
Beron finally arrives with the Autumn Court after Tamlin basically forces him to participate.
Jurian brings human soldiers.
Then another fleet appears.
Miryam and Drakon have finally arrived.
Vassa is with them.
And then Feyre notices three ships.
One named Feyre.
One named Nesta.
One named Elain.
Their father came back.
Papa Archeron, who spent so much of his daughters’ childhood unable to protect them, has crossed the world and brought an army to save them.
Excuse me while I cry.
Nesta and Cassian Face the King of Hybern
Nesta realizes someone needs to draw the King of Hybern away from the Cauldron so Feyre and Amren can reach it.
She volunteers.
Cassian goes with her.
They know there’s a very good chance they’re going to die.
The king finds Nesta.
But he also has her father.
Papa Archeron tells Nesta he loves her.
Then Hybern breaks his neck.
Nesta unleashes her power.
Cassian attacks, but the king destroys his wings and leaves him helpless.
Nesta throws herself over Cassian.
They’re prepared to die together.
And then…
ELAIN COMES OUT OF NOWHERE WITH TRUTH-TELLER.
She stabs the King of Hybern through the throat.
Nesta takes the blade and finishes the job by cutting off his head.
THE ARCHERON SISTERS.
That’s all.
Amren's True Form Is Unleashed
Unfortunately, killing the King of Hybern doesn’t stop his army.
They’re still losing.
Feyre and Amren reach the Cauldron, where Amren finally reveals her plan.
She needs Feyre to release her from the High Fae body that has contained her for thousands of years.
Doing so will restore Amren’s original form.
But Amren won’t survive it.
Feyre helps her.
Amren emerges from the Cauldron as an enormous being of flame and light and absolutely destroys Hybern’s army.
They win.
But we’re not emotionally safe yet.
Not even close.
Rhysand Dies
The Cauldron is broken.
And without it, their entire world could be destroyed.
Feyre tries to repair it using her magic, but she isn’t powerful enough.
Rhys joins her.
Together, they put the Cauldron back together.
And then Feyre realizes something is wrong.
Rhys used all of his power.
He dies.
RHYSAND.
DIES.
After everything Feyre has survived, she is suddenly holding her mate’s dead body.
And just like Feyre was resurrected after dying Under the Mountain, the High Lords each give Rhys a spark of their power.
But there’s one person left.
Tamlin.
Feyre begs him.
And Tamlin gives Rhys the power needed to bring him back, asking Feyre to simply be happy.
Rhys wakes.
And somehow he also managed to bring Amren back with him, although she’s now fully High Fae.
Because apparently Sarah J. Maas decided we’d suffered enough.
For now.
Where Everyone Ends Up
The war is over, but Prythian isn’t magically fixed.
Feyre, Nesta, and Elain mourn their father.
Lucien returns and is invited to stay in Velaris.
Miryam takes the Cauldron somewhere safe.
The humans and faeries begin the extremely complicated process of creating a new treaty.
Feyre even sends Tamlin a message thanking him, hoping he’ll eventually find some peace.
Elain plans a garden.
Nesta…
Nesta isn’t okay.
While everyone else celebrates, she’s noticeably withdrawn.
Remember that because it becomes extremely important going into A Court of Frost and Starlight and especially A Court of Silver Flames.

The Ending of A Court of Wings and Ruin
Back in Velaris, Feyre and Rhys finally have a quiet moment together.
They survived.
Their family survived.
Their city survived.
And they have an entire future ahead of them.
They make a bargain that when their time eventually comes, they’ll leave the world together.
Then there’s the small problem that Bryaxis is still loose somewhere.
You know.
Just your average ancient nightmare creature roaming around Prythian.
We’ll worry about that later.
For now, Feyre and Rhys fly over Velaris together.
Final Thoughts
A Court of Wings and Ruin feels like the conclusion to the first major chapter of Feyre’s story.
She started A Court of Thorns and Roses as a starving human girl crossing the Wall because she needed to keep her family alive. By the end of ACOWAR, she’s Feyre Archeron, High Lady of the Night Court, fighting alongside the most powerful beings in Prythian and helping determine what their world will become next.
But I think one of the biggest parts of this book is Feyre realizing that everything isn’t as black and white as she once believed.
She makes mistakes.
Tamlin does terrible things and still saves her.
Jurian appears to be an enemy and turns out to be an ally.
Nesta seems cold and uncaring yet willingly walks toward almost certain death.
Elain seems fragile until she literally puts a dagger through the King of Hybern’s throat.
And Feyre finally looks at every part of herself and decides she’s worthy anyway.
The war may be over, but the Archeron sisters’ stories definitely aren’t.
Next comes A Court of Frost and Starlight, where we get to see what happens when everyone returns home and has to figure out how to live with everything they survived.
