From a desperate heist in a brutal desert city to unlocking dangerous quicksilver magic and getting pulled into a war she never asked for, Saeris Fane’s journey escalates fast. What starts as a simple attempt to survive turns into a tangled mess of Fae politics, vampires, and a very inconvenient fated mate situation that she definitely didn’t sign up for… but now has to deal with anyway.

And if you’re planning to pick up Brimstone, this is a great recap to refresh everything before diving into the next book.

WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! If you have not read Shield of Sparrows yet, do not continue with this summary!

Saeris Fane is out here in Zilvaren—aka the driest, most stressful desert city imaginable where water is basically gold—deciding that stealing an actual gold gauntlet from a guardian is a solid life choice. Bold. Questionable. But bold.

Naturally, this goes exactly how you’d expect.

She grabs the gauntlet and runs off to find her brother Hayden, only to run into Carrion Swift… who is charming, criminal, and unfortunately someone she has history with (you know the kind). She hands Hayden the bag with the stolen gauntlet—because what could go wrong—and gets distracted flirting/arguing with Carrion.

Spoiler: everything goes wrong.

Hayden disappears, gets caught by guardians, and Saeris—being the ride-or-die sister she is—basically says “nope, that’s on me” and proceeds to fight trained soldiers. She even kills two (casual), but eventually gets captured.

Now things get weird.

She’s dragged before Queen Madra, who immediately jumps to “you must’ve been trained by the Fae” (which Saeris thought were just bedtime stories, but okay). Saeris refuses to spill anything, so Madra orders her execution and threatens her entire neighborhood. Love that energy.

So they stab her… and instead of dying like a normal person, Saeris goes “actually no” and accidentally unlocks her metal-bending powers (hello??). She melts the weapon, grabs a mysterious sword, and suddenly the floor turns into liquid metal. Because sure, why not.

Then a guy who looks like Death himself shows up, chains her like she’s in some fantasy horror romance, and drags her through a portal.

Casual Tuesday.

She wakes up in Yvelia, a Fae realm, fully healed (convenient), and meets Layne and Ren, who are like “oh good, you found Kingfisher.” And Saeris is like “…the Death guy??”

Yes. That one.

Kingfisher (Fisher) is broody, powerful, shadow daddy material and immediately annoying in the way that screams future love interest whether she likes it or not. The Fae king Belikon basically demands Saeris figure out how to use this quicksilver magic she accidentally triggered, because apparently she’s special now. No pressure.

She tries. Fails. Tries again. Still fails.

So naturally, she tries stealing from Fisher instead. Because consistency.

He catches her (obviously), but instead of killing her, he makes a deal: blood oath in exchange for bringing her brother back. She agrees.

Does he bring Hayden back?
No. Of course not.

He brings Carrion.

Because chaos.

Now they’re on the run from the Fae king, teamed up with Ren, and heading to Fisher’s home. Along the way, we learn there’s a whole vampire problem (love that for them), led by a terrifying big bad named Malcolm who’s basically building an undead army.

Meanwhile, Saeris and Fisher are doing that thing where they argue constantly but also cannot stop thinking about each other. You know. Enemies-to-lovers starter pack.

Yes, they hook up. Yes, she insists she still hates him. No one believes her.

Then—plot twist—she gets magical runes on her hands. Turns out those mean they’re fated mates. Which is inconvenient when you’re trying to pretend you don’t care.

Oh, and now they can talk in each other’s heads. No privacy. Ever.

Saeris starts getting really good with quicksilver magic—like, suspiciously good—and even makes a magical weapon by bargaining with the quicksilver itself (because apparently it talks now). Totally normal.

Then things spiral again.

A vampire lord reveals that Malcolm kidnapped Layne and basically says: bring Saeris or Layne suffers forever. Fisher is like “cool, I’ll sacrifice myself,” because apparently self-destructive hero is his brand.

Saeris confronts him about the whole fated mates situation, and he’s like “yeah but I’m dying anyway sooo…” which is rude.

They have one emotionally loaded night together, he accepts the bond… and then leaves her a note saying he’s going to go die heroically.

Men.

Saeris, Carrion, and crew chase after him into what is essentially nightmare fuel: a city of tortured undead and a labyrinth designed to break souls. Turns out the war? Totally rigged. The rulers are all in on it to keep the chaos going. Love a betrayal.

Big final showdown energy kicks in:

  • Carrion reveals he’s secretly royal (of course he is)
  • He baits Malcolm like an absolute menace
  • Saeris finds the magical coin that frees trapped souls
  • Malcolm fatally wounds her (rude again)

But Saeris still manages to kill him. Queen behavior.

As she’s dying, she gets turned into a vampire—because why not add another identity crisis—and meets a literal god who’s like:

“Congrats on the soulmate situation. Also, your relationship might end the world. No pressure.”

She wakes up half-Fae, half-vampire (iconic, honestly), Fisher is no longer dying, and because she killed Malcolm…

She’s now queen of the vampire lands.

No big deal.

Just went from desert thief to magical hybrid queen with a soulmate who might help her accidentally destroy everything.

Honestly?
She stole one gauntlet and unlocked a whole personality upgrade.
