From page one, I was captivated. The multi-POV structure threw me at first though. It doesnât follow the usual formula of a typical romantasy that you pick up today. But after finishing it, it paid off in spades. Each perspective adds depth, emotion, and intensity to the story in a way that makes it feel layered and alive. Once I found the rhythm, I couldnât put it down.
Mal Blackburn is one of the most compelling heroines Iâve read in a long time. A fourthborn child of the Kingdom of Darkness with âwitch eyesâ and a dangerous secret, she enters a political marriage with the infamous fire prince from another kingdom. Not to win his heart, but to stab it to break a curse that a witch has put on these kingdoms. What really unfolds is a deliciously tense marriage of convenience fantasy full of court intrigue, secrets, and unexpected emotional depth.
The magic system is both unique and refreshingly easy to follow. No infodumps, no over-complications of the plot, just a well-integrated part of the world that raises the stakes without bogging down the pace.

 Speaking of pace, the last 10% of this book? Had me in a chokehold. I was flying through the pages, desperate to know how it would all end. For once, I was left guessing and it certainly didn’t end the way I was anticipating.
A Kingdom of Ash and Shadow’s world-building deserves a shoutout, itâs stunning. From cursed wastelands to the fire kingdom ruled by cruelty, wyverns and dragons, the settings are immersive and vivid. You can feel the tension between the eight kingdoms, the shadow of long-lost witches, and the danger creeping at every corner.

This book had me hooked. From the moment Mal Blackburn is introducedâwitch-eyed, fourthborn, bound by secrets, I knew this was going to be more than a typical romantasy. The premise promises a slow-burn marriage of convenience arc with court intrigue, but the execution? Even better.
Letâs talk about Mal and the Fire Prince Ash. She enters this political marriage not to win his heart, but to kill him and break a curse no one else believes exists.
I loved how the author built the tension between them slowly. It was layered with suspicion, mistrust, and undeniable chemistry. And the moment Mal realizes killing him might not be the right path? My heart dropped. Because she seemed like she was going to go through with it in the whole book.
The POV structure, at first a bit unconventional, ended up being one of the best parts. Seeing the political threads, the danger from other kingdoms from other characters perspectives. Then also the hidden magic from different angles gave the story adds real weight.
Now, the twist with Malâs true identity that was revealed at the end? HOLY COW. I usually use to shadow daddies being in romantasy books but this was a shadow woman. (Not sure what to name it but it was unique and I LOVED IT)
The full scope of her power, was SO satisfying. I can’t wait to go deeper into her true identity and her really embrace her shadow powers.
I also didnât expect the Fire Prince to be so not cruel. Brooding, yes. But thereâs more to him than the rumors, and that slow uncovering was pure gold.Â
The last 10% had me racing to the end. Secrets explode. Betrayals are revealed. And that final scene? Where literally a lot of the monarchs and heirs die from all the kingdoms by the hands of the witches!?!? They apparently have been slowly infiltrating the Fire Kingdom and no one knew about it. Wild ride.
The only problem now? I need book two NOW and thankfully it will be released this year.
