If you read my honest review of Burn of the Everflame, then you already know this finale wasn’t exactly my favorite book in the series.

At over 800 pages, Burn is a commitment, and if my review has you a little nervous about diving into this massive finale or you simply don’t want to read 800+ pages to find out how the Kindred’s Curse Saga ends, I got you covered.

Now, I will say this upfront. There is absolutely no way I can cover every single thing that happens in this book because, as I pointed out in my review, this thing is MASSIVE.

Instead, I’m focusing on the major plot points, important reveals, character moments, deaths, and everything you really need to know to understand how the story ends.

If it’s been a while since you read the earlier books, you can also refresh your memory with my Spark of the Everflame Book Recap, Glow of the Everflame Book Recap, and Heat of the Everflame Book Recap.

Or, if you’re sitting there thinking, I barely remember who half these people are, my Ultimate Guide to the Kindred’s Curse Saga breaks down the characters, Realms, magic, Kindred, and major lore from the entire series.

So whether you’re here for a refresher, you’re scared to start Burn after reading my review, or you’re looking at those 800+ pages and thinking absolutely not, let’s get into what actually happens in Burn of the Everflame.

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️MAJOR SPOILER WARNING: This recap spoils basically everything in Burn of the Everflame, including character deaths, Diem and Luther’s relationship, Ophiucae, Teller, Henri, and the ending.

Diem Is Alive...But Trapped

After being stabbed through the heart with a godstone blade at the end of Heat of the Everflame, Diem is alive on Coeurîle.

Barely.

The godstone blade should have killed her, but something is keeping her alive: her connection to Luther.

And Diem has realized something she hasn’t told him yet.

They are mates. Basically Fated Mates level.

Her mating mark confirms what she has suspected about their connection, but Luther doesn’t know.

For now, that isn’t exactly Diem’s biggest problem.

She’s trapped on Coeurîle.

Perthe is dead after protecting Luther, Diem has no obvious way home, and she desperately needs to figure out how to escape before Ophiucae destroys everything.

Then Sorae appears.

Instead of being thrilled to see her gryvern, Diem panics because the last thing she wants is for Sorae to become trapped there too.

But Sorae’s arrival isn’t the only thing waiting for Diem on the island.

Meanwhile, Luther Is Falling Apart

Luther doesn’t know whether Diem survived.

He’s with Auralie, Teller, and the remaining rebel forces, but his focus is exactly where you’d expect it to be.

Diem.

I did lose a little respect for this man in this part of the story. He is just pining away at this point.

Auralie, however, has a slightly larger problem to deal with.

Ophiucae is trying to take over Emarion.

She believes flameroot may be capable of suppressing his magic, and Teller becomes increasingly involved in figuring out how they can weaponize it.

The remaining Crowns also begin to understand that Ophiucae isn’t an enemy any one Realm can defeat alone.

Suddenly, the Descended rulers and mortal rebels have to consider working together.

Nothing brings people together quite like mutually assured destruction.

Auralie isn’t interested in helping the Descended without conditions, though. She wants real changes for mortals and half-mortals, including representation, equal rights, and reparations.

And most importantly?

She wants her daughter back.

Diem Finally Meets the Kindred

While trapped on Coeurîle, Diem enters the ancient temple and finally encounters the original Kindred.

And this is where some of the biggest pieces of the Kindred’s Curse Saga mythology finally begin falling into place.

The Kindred weren’t originally gods.

They came to Emarion from another world and brought a piece of heartstone with them. Its power became deeply intertwined with the Forging, godstone, the Crowns, and the magical structure of Emarion.

But there was another sibling.

Ophiucae.

Diem’s biological father.

The Kindred reveal more about their history with Ophiucae and just how dangerous he truly is.

They also explain that Sorrow’s Edge contains a fragment of heartstone and is one of the few things capable of permanently killing him.

Unfortunately, heartstone magic requires balance.

A life for a life.

If Sorrow’s Edge is used to permanently kill Ophiucae, another life must be exchanged for his.

Eventually, Diem understands whose life that may need to be.

Hers.

Because apparently being stranded on a magical island with an immortal father trying to conquer the world wasn’t stressful enough.

There is a lot of lore coming together here, especially surrounding the Kindred, Ophiucae, heartstone, godstone, the Forging, and the Crowns. If you need those pieces laid out separately, I break them down in my Ultimate Guide to the Kindred’s Curse Saga.

Diem Becomes Queen of Emarion

The Kindred offer Diem their remaining Crowns.

Not one.

Not two.

All of them.

By accepting them, Diem gains the powers associated with all nine Realms.

And she needs them almost immediately.

By the time Diem escapes Coeurîle, Ophiucae is attacking Lumnos.

He’s using his magic to control others, turning people against their own allies and making it increasingly difficult to tell enemy from victim.

Then Diem arrives.

Wearing all nine Crowns.

This is the first time Ophiucae really has to face the possibility that his daughter might be powerful enough to challenge him.

Diem forces him to retreat.

Temporarily.

Because getting Ophiucae to leave and actually killing him are two very different problems.

Diem and Luther Finally Reunite

After everything they have been through, Diem and Luther finally reunite.

Except Diem is carrying two fairly enormous secrets.

She knows they’re mates.

And she believes defeating Ophiucae may require her to die.

So naturally, instead of sitting Luther down and having a healthy conversation about either of those things, Diem starts pushing him away.

Because if there is one tradition we are apparently carrying all the way through this series, it’s keeping extremely important information from the person who probably needs to know it.

Luther knows something is wrong.

He just doesn’t know what.

Luther Is Half-Mortal

As Diem tries to restructure Lumnos, she proposes a new system where mortals, half-mortals, and Descended have representation rather than allowing the powerful Descended families to continue controlling everything.

The Twenty Houses aren’t exactly thrilled.

Then Luther drops one of the biggest revelations about himself.

Luther is half-mortal.

His mother, Florille, was mortal.

His father, Remis, hid the truth because Luther’s parentage could have gotten him killed under the progeny laws.

The revelation shocks the Twenty Houses and completely changes Luther’s position within the society he was raised to eventually lead.

It also means Luther has spent his entire life unknowingly existing between the two groups now fighting for Emarion’s future.

Diem Creates a New Council

Diem doesn’t want to replace one absolute ruler with another.

Instead, she tries creating a council that gives different groups throughout Lumnos actual representation.

Sounds reasonable.

Naturally, everyone makes it difficult.

The old Houses don’t want to lose their influence. Alliances and deals are happening behind closed doors, and Diem quickly learns that changing laws is much easier than convincing powerful people to willingly give up power.

At one point, Diem is literally voted off the council she helped create.

Yes.

The Queen of Emarion gets kicked off her own council.

Thankfully, Eleanor and the Embers help outmaneuver the old Houses and keep Diem’s reforms moving forward.

Ignios Is Dying

When Diem travels to Ignios, she discovers how badly Ophiucae’s actions have devastated the Realm.

Food and water are disappearing.

People are starving.

Instead of demanding loyalty because she now holds the Crowns, Diem uses her new powers to actually help them.

She uses Meros magic to restore water and Arboros magic to help vegetation grow again.

Her actions begin convincing more people that she isn’t trying to become another tyrant.

Among them is High General Nidara.

Slowly, Diem begins building an alliance strong enough to challenge Ophiucae.

Sorrow's Edge May Be Their Only Chance

Diem knows defeating Ophiucae temporarily isn’t enough.

They need to kill him permanently.

That makes understanding Sorrow’s Edge even more important.

Diem begins searching for everything she can find about heartstone, godstone, and the weapon itself.

Eventually, she and Teller travel to Umbros to search the lost archives for answers.

And because nothing can ever go smoothly, Diem is captured.

The Centenaries drug and torture her, forcing their way into her memories.

Diem and Teller eventually escape, but what she learns confirms the possibility she’s been desperately hoping to avoid.

The heartstone demands balance.

If she kills Ophiucae with Sorrow’s Edge…

Diem must die too.

And she still doesn’t tell Luther.

Want to keep track of the Crowns and the realms they rule? My 10 Realms of The Kindred’s Curse Saga Guide breaks down each realm, its Crown, magic, gryvern, and how it treats mortals.

Ophiucae Steals Sorrow's Edge

Just when Diem finally understands how they might kill Ophiucae, things somehow get worse.

Fortos is attacked.

And Sorrow’s Edge is stolen.

Now the one weapon capable of permanently killing Ophiucae is in the hands of Ophiucae.

Wonderful.

Everything is going beautifully.

Diem and Luther Stop Fighting Their Feelings

Diem continues trying to distance herself from Luther because she knows what defeating Ophiucae may cost.

But eventually, that wall between them starts coming down.

They reconcile and finally allow themselves to have the relationship they’ve spent the entire series fighting toward.

For a little while, we actually get Diem and Luther being Diem and Luther.

Unfortunately, Diem still hasn’t told him that she expects to die.

So even their happiest moments have that secret hanging over them.

The Truth About Andrei's Death

Then we get one of the ugliest revelations of Burn.

Diem learns what really happened to Andrei.

Henri was involved in his murder.

Whatever remained of Diem’s relationship with Henri is destroyed.

Henri explains that Vance manipulated and coerced him into participating, but that doesn’t erase what happened.

Teller wants Henri dead.

Diem doesn’t.

Not because she forgives Henri.

She doesn’t.

But Henri is expecting a child with Lana, and Diem refuses to make another child grow up without a father just to satisfy her need for revenge.

She spares Henri.

But she sends him away.

For Diem, mercy doesn’t mean forgiveness.

The Battle at Mortfeu Pass

Ophiucae’s magic becomes even more horrifying as the war continues.

Using Umbros magic, he can strip people of their memories and control their minds.

At Mortfeu Pass, Diem faces an army filled with people whose identities have essentially been erased.

They’re alive.

But who they were is gone.

Diem desperately wants to save them.

She can’t.

Eventually, she has to make the horrific decision to kill them rather than allow Ophiucae to continue using them as puppets.

She unleashes her power across the battlefield.

It’s devastating.

And it forces Diem to confront just how much this war is costing everyone.

Diem Frees the Gryverns

Diem also comes to understand that the gryverns have never truly had a choice.

The Forging magically bound them to rulers.

Diem refuses to build a new Emarion while continuing one of the old world’s systems of forced obedience.

So she breaks their bonds.

She frees the gryverns.

Some people think she’s reckless.

Others begin questioning her leadership.

But Diem gives the gryverns something they’ve never had.

A choice.

And when they’re finally free to leave?

Sorae chooses Diem.

Tybold chooses Luther.

Not because magic requires them to stay.

Because they want to.

Diem Is Taken to Ophiucae

Diem is eventually kidnapped by Kiani and taken to Sophos.

And while she’s there, her relationship with Ophiucae becomes much more complicated.

He’s no longer simply the mysterious villain she has been fighting.

He’s her biological father.

Diem sees pieces of humanity in him.

She learns more about his history.

She sees the hidden children.

And she is forced to confront something uncomfortable:

Understanding why someone became who they are doesn’t mean you have to excuse what they’ve done.

Eventually, Henri helps arrange Diem’s escape.

Luther, Teller, and Taran come for her.

During the confrontation, Teller attacks Ophiucae.

Diem gets the opportunity to kill him.

But she can’t do it.

So Luther does.

Luther beheads Ophiucae.

Problem solved!

Except this is Burn of the Everflame, so obviously not.

Diem Loses Her Magic

Because of the terms of one of Diem’s bonded bargains, Luther killing Ophiucae instead of Diem comes with consequences.

Diem loses her magic.

Then comes the even worse news.

Ophiucae isn’t actually dead.

He’s alive.

Again.

At this point, Ophiucae is basically the fantasy villain version of a telemarketer.

He keeps coming back no matter how many times you hang up.

Taran and Zalaric Become Mates

Somehow, in the middle of all this chaos, we actually get something happy.

Taran and Zalaric complete their mating ceremony.

Their relationship gives everyone a rare moment to celebrate something other than surviving another day.

And their mating ceremony also pushes Diem closer to finally confronting the truth about her own relationship.

Diem Finally Tells Luther They're Mates

Eventually, Diem and Luther reveal their mating marks to each other.

There is no more denying it.

Diem and Luther are mates.

They complete their bond and finally fully choose one another.

After books of fighting, longing, almost dying, political disasters, hidden identities, secret feelings, and enough miscommunication to power all nine Realms, we finally get there.

Unfortunately, Ophiucae still exists.

So the happiness can’t last very long.

Teller Finds a Way to Fight Ophiucae's Mind Control

Throughout Burn, Teller has been experimenting with flameroot and godstone.

Eventually, he creates a paste capable of interfering with Ophiucae’s magic.

This is huge.

Ophiucae’s ability to control minds has made him incredibly difficult to fight because Diem’s army doesn’t want to slaughter innocent people who are being forced to attack them.

Teller’s invention finally gives them a possible defense.

But Teller has another plan.

And he doesn’t tell Diem.

Teller's Death

And now we arrive at the part that emotionally destroyed basically everyone.

Teller decides he’s going after Ophiucae himself.

He knows Diem will stop him.

So he makes sure she can’t.

He drugs her.

Then Teller goes to confront Ophiucae using the flameroot weapon.

Auralie is under Ophiucae’s control during the confrontation.

Teller manages to create an opening and attack him.

But Ophiucae kills Teller.

Teller dies trying to stop Ophiucae and give everyone else a chance to defeat him.

Diem loses her little brother.

Lily loses the man she loves.

Auralie loses her son.

And whatever sympathy Diem may have developed for her biological father is pretty much obliterated.

Alixe's Final Battle

Unfortunately, Teller isn’t the only devastating loss.

Ophiucae’s gryvern, Xipherus, remains a massive threat.

Alixe takes him on and manages to bring him down using a ballista.

She succeeds.

But Alixe dies in the process.

Another member of Diem and Luther’s family is gone.

By the time they reach the final battle, victory already comes with an enormous cost.

Luther Shows Diem Their Home

Before the final battle, Luther shows Diem something he has created for them.

A home.

Not a palace.

Not a throne room.

Not some enormous royal estate.

A cottage.

After spending the entire series fighting against titles, expectations, duty, and other people’s plans for her life, Diem finally has someone who understands what she actually wants.

A place where she and Luther can simply live.

A life that belongs to them.

Which, naturally, makes what happens next hurt approximately 900 times more.

The Final Battle on Coeurîle

Everything eventually comes full circle.

Diem and Luther return to Coeurîle for the final confrontation with Ophiucae.

His armies remain under his control, and the battle becomes the culmination of everything Diem has learned about her power.

Then Diem taps into something even older than the magic of the Crowns.

The Undying Fire of the Old Gods.

Silver fire erupts across the island.

The heartstone is shattered.

And Diem finally confronts Ophiucae.

Ophiucae tries to define their relationship through blood.

But Diem rejects him.

Because Diem already had a father.

Andrei Bellator was her father.

Then Diem drives Sorrow’s Edge into Ophiucae.

She kills him.

Except the heartstone still demands balance.

Ophiucae begins healing.

And Diem finally tells Luther the truth.

For Ophiucae to remain dead…

Diem has to die.

There is A LOT happening in these final chapters between Sorrow’s Edge, heartstone, the Everflame, Ophiucae’s death, Diem’s sacrifice, and what happens afterward.

If you want to dig deeper into how all of it actually works, read my Burn of the Everflame Ending Explained after finishing this recap.

Because we’re not done yet.

Luther Has to Kill Diem

Luther refuses.

Of course he does.

He has spent the entire series trying to protect Diem, and now she is asking him to be the person who kills her.

Diem reminds him of his promise to her.

When that isn’t enough, she ultimately commands him as Queen.

Luther takes Sorrow’s Edge.

And drives it through Diem.

Diem dies.

The life-for-life exchange is completed.

Ophiucae is finally destroyed.

The remaining heartstone and Sorrow’s Edge are destroyed with him.

And Luther can no longer feel their mating bond.

Diem is gone.

Diem Wakes Up in the After

Except…

Diem’s story isn’t finished.

She wakes beneath the Everflame tree in the After.

There she encounters the Kindred.

And then she sees the people she has lost.

Andrei.

Teller.

Perthe.

Her family is there.

For the first time in a very long time, Diem could stop fighting.

She could stay.

Teller is even given the possibility of returning, but he chooses to remain.

Diem refuses to sacrifice someone else or take Teller’s place just so she can return to life.

Then the red-haired god connected to the Everflame offers Diem another choice.

She can stay in the After.

She can have the mating bond removed.

She can remain with the people she has lost.

Or she can go back.

Diem thinks about Luther.

And she chooses him.

She chooses life.

Luther Tries to Keep Going Without Her

Meanwhile, months pass in Emarion.

Luther is devastated.

But he continues the work he and Diem started.

The war may be over, but Emarion still needs to be rebuilt.

The old systems still need replacing.

The council needs leadership.

People want Luther to take the Crown.

But Luther refuses to simply become another ruler sitting above everyone else and repeat the same system they fought to destroy.

He removes the Crown.

And then…

Diem walks into the room.

Alive.

She appears wearing a crown of silver fire.

Their mating connection returns.

Luther realizes she’s really there.

And Diem places the Crown back on his head.

After everything they have survived, they finally get another chance.

One Year Later

The epilogue takes us forward one year.

Emarion is changing.

Rather than returning to the old system where Descended rulers hold absolute power, a unified council now gives mortals and Descended representation.

The world isn’t suddenly perfect.

But it’s different.

And there’s finally hope that it might stay that way.

Diem and Luther are married and fully mated.

And remember the cottage Luther built?

That’s where they live.

Not in some enormous palace.

In their home in the Lumnos forest.

Sorae and Tybold remain with them because they choose to.

Taran and Zalaric are together.

And then Penn Cole gives us one last emotional hit.

Lily is pregnant with Teller’s child.

Teller may be gone, but a piece of him remains.

Final Thoughts

And that is officially the end of Burn of the Everflame and the Kindred’s Curse Saga!

If you read my honest review of Burn of the Everflame, you already know this wasn’t my favorite book in the series.

At 800+ pages, there were definitely parts that felt like a journey to get through.

But I will give Burn this: the ending made the book for me. Seeing everything finally come together with Diem, Luther, the Kindred, Ophiucae, and the Everflame gave me the closure I wanted after spending four books in this world.

And even though Burn wasn’t necessarily for me, I still think the Kindred’s Curse Saga as a whole gave us plenty to obsess over, especially Diem and Luther.

I mean, we went from her practically wanting to stab this man to building a cottage together.

We love growth.

If you finished this recap and you’re still thinking, Wait…but HOW did that ending actually work?, head over to my Burn of the Everflame Ending Explained because there is a lot more going on with Diem’s death, Sorrow’s Edge, the heartstone, the Everflame, and her return.

And if you want to go back and see how everything connects from Spark all the way through Burn, my Ultimate Guide to the Kindred’s Curse Saga has the characters, Realms, magic, Kindred, lore, and major events all in one place.
