Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
The Inheritance Games, # 2
“The Hawthorne Legacy” by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a thrilling and engaging novel that follows the Hawthorne family as they navigate the dangerous world of high society and family secrets. This is the second book of The Inheritance Games series and is an excellent read for mystery, suspense, and drama fans. Overall, it is a well-written and enjoyable addition to the YA genre.
This second installment of the series is packed with drama and mild suspense. This is not by all means a hard read. It is easy to read and comprehend. What I like most about this book is that it is unpredictable. There are a lot of times that you think something will pan out, but it doesn’t. So, it was a nice change for me to just read and be shocked by how the story progressed.
Avery is still adjusting to the life of being an heiress. With almost being killed previously, she is on edge and still watching out for her life. As she continues to unravel the Hawthorne mystery, she can’t help but wonder what secrets her mother kept and who else is out to get her.
A lot is unfolding in this book. You find out more about each of the family members’ motives as to why they are who they are and why they do things that they do. All is not well even with the luxuries that the Hawthorne estate provides.
The relationship triangle continues to unfold with Jameson and Grayson. Though I feel that Jameson has a better sense of the development of character, I still love Grayson just because he comes across as more protective and mature. Who doesn’t love the “touch her or die.” moments even in a YA novel?
I will say that Max, who is Avery’s best friend, was not unbearable in this one. Unlike the first one The Inheritance Games, she was actually quite fun to read this time. You do get to see her more often in this one and I am curious how she will play a part in the third book.
The Final Gambit is the next and final book in this series, and I cannot wait to see how this all wraps up.
